Definition of Artificial Intelligence

A universally accepted definition of Artificial Intelligence does not exist currently. This has in fact enabled the field of AI to blossom and expand unrestricted into unthought-of territories, and has allowed it to reach its current state.  However various researchers and prominent figures in this field have come up with their own interpretations of the term AI, which now comprises of a separate body. Initially, during the conception of AI, it was defined as a field and concept, and not a capability, while nowadays it is defined as the ability of systems to perform certain tasks. The definition of AI is not fixed and remains to evolve. Due to this constant evolution and change, sometimes certain technology is not deemed as AI anymore. This is called the odd paradox and has been included in the subsequent sections.

Few popular definitions are as follows:-

  • John McCarthy[1]:the science and engineering of making intelligent machines … [where] intelligence is the computational part of the ability to achieve goals in the world
  •  Marvin Minsky: the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men
  • Demis Hassabis[2]:the science of making machines smart
  • Avinash Kaushik[3]:is an intelligent machine
  • Jim Sterne[4]:
is the next, logical step in computing: a program that can figure out things for itself. It’s a program that can reprogram itself
  • Steven Struhl[5]:anything a machine does to respond to its environment to maximize its chances of success
  • Steven Finlay[6]: the replication of human analytical and/or decision-making capabilities
